Chapter
The Goddess of Flame
The faith of the cold flames
Across The Third Earth, attitudes toward faith and the afterlife vary dramatically. In Eden and the surrounding Federation, advanced science supplants most spiritual beliefs; citizens regard death as final, keeping only archived records of a life once lived. Meanwhile, in the medieval continents beyond the ocean, religion thrives—and chief among the faiths is that of the Goddess of Flame.
Eden and the Federation: Rationalism Prevails
Citizens of Eden practice no traditional worship. They know that upon death, the physical self is lost forever; only a digital record of a consciousness endures—an echo, not a soul. Decades of cutting-edge science and Soulborn guidance leave little room for supernatural explanations; the Soulborn themselves, though revered for their near-immortal knowledge, are recognized as mentors, not gods.
The Federation began its recorded history at a stage akin to an industrial revolution, bypassing pre-scientific religious development. Some traditions mimic old-world customs—kept for heritage and celebration—but references to deities are replaced by acknowledgments of advanced knowledge. True religious fervor rarely takes hold.
The Continents: the Faith of the Flame Mother
Contrasting sharply with Eden's secularism, the medieval realms across the sea gave rise to many beliefs—and none burns brighter than the Faith of the Flame Mother. This is the story as the temples tell it.
The Night the Sky Burned Cold
Generations ago, the chronicles say, a flourishing city stood proud among the kingdoms—until the night a light descended from beyond the stars. It came as a beam of many colors: violet, blue, and blinding white, raining down flames unlike any fire known to smith or hearth. Those who reached toward them swore the flames were cold—beautiful, silent, and cold as the void itself. And yet the city burned. Stone, timber, and flesh alike dissolved into radiant light, and by dawn, where thousands had lived, there remained only stillness—and scattered across the ash, small glowing orbs, like eyes that would not close. The pious say they were the souls of the taken, gathered into embers. None who touched them returned unchanged.
The Woman Who Walked Out of the Fire
Out of that devastation, one woman emerged alive. Untouched, unburned—walking out of the cold light as though it had chosen to spare her. To those who found her on the road, her survival could be nothing less than a miracle. She vanished for a time. And when she returned, she carried wisdom no scholar of the age could account for: philosophy that quieted kings, insights that healed and fed and taught. The people knew her then for what the fire had revealed her to be—the Flame Mother, the Goddess of Flame, she who passed through the purifying fire and came back bearing its light.
The Faith and Its Teachings
Her devotees paint the many-colored flames—violet, blue, and white—upon their temple walls, and walk in candlelit processions of colored fire, symbols of purification and renewal. The Flame Mother's teachings place knowledge above all: the enlightening fire, they say, both destroys ignorance and illuminates truth. Her faith has spread across many kingdoms, shaping moral codes, governance, and daily life. Pilgrims still travel to the shrines built near the site of the old cataclysm, seeking blessing from the traces of the divine flame—and swearing, some of them, that on moonless nights the ash still glows.
Two Worlds, Two Truths
Thus the Third Earth holds two answers to the same sky. In Eden and the Federation, the world is data, reason, and archived memory; nothing burns that cannot be explained. Across the ocean, the same world is providence and holy fire; the unexplainable is not feared but worshipped. The Goddess of Flame stands at the heart of that divide—a faith born from a single impossible night, and from one woman who walked out of the cold flames alive.
